The book is a beginner's guide to the emergence of chinese nationalism. Every chapter begins with a modern day example of how these debates, which emerged in the late nineteenth and then carried on into the early twentieth century. The author pins a lot of what we know as modern chinese identity down to a group of reformers that were active at the end of the ching dynasty.
