The age of the servantless cook was a long way off, and it wasn't uncommon for even some servants to have servants themselves. Domestic service remains the biggest employer of women right up until the Second World War. Something like 31% of women at any one time are in domestic service - an enormous figure. But what you do get more and more is servants living out so you tend to get this thing called a cook general.
