John Rawls said that inequality is a massive lottery. We have to spend much more time acknowledging this, he says. There are strategies to provoke the opening of the arms and the listening for different identity groups in discussions about issues such as health care or education. The tragedy of the present seems to be that certain discussions seem to get shut down before they can even start with the lines "You can't say that to me because of who you are and who I am"
