Building a Question-Answering System, You Should Think of It as an Agent

The whole expert system era was characterized by the idea that we're building consulting systems, systems that you ask questions of and they give you answers. But even then, some people, for example, Bob Wonski, who was a faculty member at Berkeley, was pointing out that even a question-answering system actually needs to take an agent stance. And as I started teaching the AI course at Berkeley, starting in 86, this just became more and more clear that it was the right way to tie together all the work that was going on in AI.
