Mumford was obsessed with all things Melville for his entire life. The most important gloss of Moby Dick for Mumford was like, this book is not a tragedy. Even though everybody except Ishmael is killed, because specifically because there is somebody left to tell the tale. And I think Mumford really held onto that in a very positive way.
