Susie King Taylor was born Susanna Baker on August 6 1848 to a Gucci family living in Liberty County, Georgia. This memoir is one of a very, very few published works by Black Women about their lives during the Civil War. And it is the only one known to have been written by a Black woman who was actively involved in the military.
