The Birdman of Alcatraz
The Birdman of Alcatraz was Robert Stroud, an inmate at Leavenworth Penitentiary in the 1920s. He smuggled two baby swallows into his cell and raised them himself. When one bird died he procured some dirt from a guard for the other to eat. The second bird almost miraculously recovered. It's kind of like how dogs eat grass.
