Is There a Lack of Expertise on Afghanistan?

When i first started doing research in afghanistan almost two decades ago, there was hardly a scholarly community to speak of because so many people had left the country. That has changed dramatically, but i think that the international community had such powerful agendas. I came away from my experiences really trying to understand political authority in the state in very different ways. It's caused me to rethink so many assumptions that i had going into that work.
