leslie rgroves was a dynamo, and many say he was indispensable to the success of the manhattan project. He directed a million men and spent eight billion constructing camps, air bases, munition plants, hospitals and even the pentagon. J robert oppenheimer, a brilliant physicist at u. C berkeley, was an unlikely choice to direct the scientific research but groves ignored the critics. The relationship was a delicate balancing act, but groves and oppenheimer made it work and produced the world's first atomic bomb in 27 months.
