God's Presence in the Temple

In exodus forty and first kings eight, god's presence is depicted as a cloud filling the tabernacle. The very next chapter, god makes a promise to David that his kingdom will endure forever. Then shortly after his death, david's tent was turned into a brick and mortar temple. It seemed like a giant step forward, and for much of a good chunk of time it was. So what happened to god's promise to be present? I thoughtDavid's throne was permanent, one that would never end.
