The Devastating Effect of Divorce on Women in Ancient Society
In the ancient Near East under Babylonian law a man could reclaim his wife after divorce up to five years later like she was property. In Jesus' day, this is the short version, there was a raging debate over that one little phrase, something indecent. What exactly does Moses mean by something indecent? Most rabbis in the past had said well it means adultery. Now again, Jesus is dealing with a core problem in the human condition that is the byproduct of the objectification of women.
