I think of personal policies as these red velvet ropes, the stanchions that you see at a Trader Joe's or a movie theater. They are pretty, they help guide us in the direction we want to go but they are ours. We can change that direction whenever we choose. And I think that that is so much more empowering than putting up boundaries that keep other people out. In collectivist countries like India or Indonesia, everyone feels that they need these strategies.
