The Death of the Ottoman Empire
As the Ottoman Empire declines, conquered Balkan countries gaining independence. The Balkans in particular is a hotbed of crisis thanks to its strategic importance. Major powers vie for control in an escalating struggle to dominate the region. A complex blend of nationalism, resentment and insecurity leads the region to become known as the Powder Keg of Europe. On June 29, 1914, the powder keg explodes when Art Duke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated on the streets of Sarajevo.
