The Importance of Aspiration

In two weeks' time, in a formal ceremony viewed by millions, we will get a new king. There was no need for any imagination about what job he would get. Aspiration didn't come into it. This was pre-ordained. He was literally born into it. And that's the problem. The Royals are a class act. They establish inherited privilege at the heart of government and embeds patronage at the centre of power. It enshrines the hereditary principle in a system which increasingly enriches the privilege and privileges the rich. A system that favours not democracy, but deference where the poor know their place and the rich have their power. We should abolish the monarchy
