Is Plato's Religion a Conspiracy?

In Critius's view, religion is nothing but the lordly lie of a great and clever statesman. Plato's views are strikingly similar in the introduction of the myth in the republic where he bluntly admits that the myth is a lie. The only way to keep that truth hidden is by lying to people about what in fact they're seeing.
