Hubble Space Telescope
The manager of the Hubble Space Telescope was able to use it for a certain number of hours per month. He decided rather than solve a specific problem that was known in astronomy, he pointed the telescope at a region of space where there was nothing. And what was revealed was surprising - galaxy after galaxy after galaxy. In every place where it appeared to be dark actually there were galaxies, but so distant they were too faint to see.
