The Future of Labour
I sense sometimes that the current Labour leadership are following the new Labour of the mid-1990s. I have no interest in partying like it's 1999, I'm much more interested in a Labour party that faces the future and the challenges of the next decade rather than looking back. And if you were to draw up a ledger of accounts in terms of our domestic performance economically, I think those new Labour years were very effective at dealing with inequality at the bottom and not nearly effective enough at dealing withequality at the top. But what do you mean by inequality at the top? I think there was a sense that we were in a position to effectively redistribute the public expenditure into sure-start centres
