Women were entering the workforce in greater numbers in the late 70s, early 80s. They needed clothes to wear into the workplace that would not make them the object of sexual attention. A men's wear look was a way to look intelligent, educated, kind of cool and above the fray. Then we go to that explosion of color that becomes the J-crew of the 21st century.
