Is Sugar Associated With Alzheimer's Disease?
High sugar consumption is associated with increased risk for obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Studies also show that it's associated with higher rates of depression, anxiety, and even Alzheimer's disease. For serious mental disorders, ones like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, we have a very large longitudinal study followed children from infancy to age 25. The children who have the highest levels of insulin resistance had a five-fold increased risk of being at risk for developing schizophrenia or bipolar disorder by the time they turn 24.
