The first book i read was dragg in spain by barbara hamley. The wheel of time also another big inspiration for me, it was the first really big, epic, fancy series that i got into. I usually mention an author called melony ron. She's, again, lesser known these days, but she did some really interesting things with magic systems early on in my career. Maybe i can do something like this.
