What I Learned From You Today
When I was in grad school, and it happened to be the only black student at Columbia. And I didn't want to be pigeonholed as being that person because I felt that all the conversations surrounding identity kind of circled back to me in my studio. The reason why I was making that work was really talking about that. It was talking about how challenging and daunting and aggressive it is when you're trying to fine tune your craftAs a younger artist, I was not speaking like I'm speaking now. But I was somewhat aware of what I was doing and I was able to talk about it in similar terms but not as clear.
