Is Open Innovation a Good Thing?

Open innovation is sometimes conflated with open source methodology for soffer development. While open source shares the focus on value creation throughout an industry value chain, its proponents usually deny or downplay the importance of value capture. The only set of books that i've really seen that talk about this idea of multiple companies collaborating on platform are by henry chesborough around open innovation.
