Linguistics is all about focusing on the language that we use. And when we are speaking a language, something makes it not very visible to us untilWe focus on it. So linguists are used to giving words as sequence of characters and trying to distinguish between them in different ways. But this kind of GPT-3 types of models that just sort of look at these strings of words can't have understanding, like true understanding. That's why they're useful for speech recognition and machine translation where an important sub task is, okay, what's a likely string? Right?
