Canoes and the Spanish in Cuba

In 15 11, the spanish decided to establish a permanent colony in cuba. The canoes were an indigenous vessel. Thath predates christopher columbus for centuries. So when they arrive in the islands and people start coming out in canoes to greet them, they don't have a word for it. But yes, they moved around for fishing, to spread news, to conquer. That's another form of contact and movement, which was warfare.
