Nigel barley notes that James Brooke dreamed of making a quick fortune in the foreign service. After he made his money, he planned to make a glorious return to the comfortable life of an English gentleman. In late 1894, the company went to war with Burma. He volunteered to raise up a unit of irregular cavalry, locals who would act as scouts for the campaign. His standard way of doing this was to like get all of his soldiers organized out and order them to charge.
