What's the Impetus Behind Your Essay?

The late michael brooks used to make a joke about the way people should treat each other. He said, "You don't were to be like, sorry, dad, i'm a communist" The idea that we need agonistic respect for our enemies is part of what he calls 'the radical democratic theory tradition' In his essay on mass politics, Emile Zuckerman says it's not enough to just agree with your opponents and then fight them over their ideas. But if you're going to have an open dialogue in public life, why can't there be some kind of mutual respect?
