In 19 76, the country had escaped bankruptcy by being bailed out by the international monetary fund. A decade of industrial conflict climaxed in a winter of discontent not unlike the long summer of strikes we are facing now. Letting the market rip in britain produced a society quite different from the one thatcher expected and wanted. The global freemarket that thatcher believed had come into being with the fall of communism is falling apart around us. There's something comical in the suggest n that the difficulties of the conservative party to day can be resolved by reverting to the ideology thatcher was proclaiming when she was ejected from power.
