Richard was hired very quickly as a crew member on a lake freighter. After he felt better, his brother-in-law drove him to the National Maritime Union Hall and Richard filed paperwork for his Siemens card. Incidentally, the Union Hall is just one block east of the nurse's townhouse. It was there he spotted 53-year-old Ella May Hooper and followed her. He accosted her with a knife and forced her to go back to his room. There Richard raped her and stole her 22-caliber pistol.
