Mary Todd Lincoln's Life and Times
Mary Todd Lincoln married Abraham Lincoln in November 1842. The couple had a tempestuous courtship, and Mary's previous relationship with Stephen Douglas complicates things further. With Mary at his side, the next decade or so sees Lincoln consolidate his position both professionally and politically. In the mid-1850s, Lincoln throws his lot in with a new political group who are formed to oppose the Democrats, the Republican Party.
