Is There a Relationship Between Afterlife and Power?

I'm curious if you have, if you noticed any correlations between like empire or power and people's views of it. In Egypt and in some very, very ancient cultures, those in charge were a privileged class in more ways than one. And so that's an indication in the Christian tradition of the door to the afterlife to heaven, at least to opening up.
