CHAPTER

The Indological Indic Texts and the Subtle Body

Tibetans and Buddhists more generally at the height of Mahayana culture in India innovated and actually developed further the maps and concepts and practices based on this concept. So there were very robust Indic traditions that dealt with these issues of kind of embodiment and the relationship between the body and whatever part of you kind of reincarnates. The first time that chakras are ever mentioned in a text is from the seventh or eighth century CE in a play from northern India, which has a much later history than people realize. And so it's good to see some academic work picking up on them.
