The History of Stout in the 1700s
How popular was stout compared to Porter in the late 1700s? I know Porter was wildly popular for a time there, especially in London. But people were still brewing things that were basically like porters bottling them and calling them nourishing stout or some rubbish like that. This is what Fuller said. If you look at Fuller's brewing records, their Porter carries on right into the 1950s. They weren't actually selling it at this Porter. It was actually being bottled and sold as nourishing stout. And it's only probably 10 years after they'd stopped having Porter that they actually changed the brew house name to nourishing Stout.
