Is There a Dilemma Between Philosophy and Theology?
The Gregorian reforms were admirable in many ways. But they also establish strongly a kind of clerical authoritarianism and a stronger division between the clerical and the lay. I think that that rather disturbed the pattern of thinking about things with in Christendom. Up to that point there had been no sharp distinction made between philosophy and theology. There was a huge fluidity, that fluidity continued to be the case in the East.
