If you're on universal credit, pension credit or in some cases other benefits, then you are likely entitled to a social tariff from your broadband provider which will be substantially cheaper than most people are paying. Ofcom came out with a report this week talking about social tariffs and people missing out on them. You don't have to go with your current provider if you're out of contract but you could stick withyour current provider if that's easy for you. There are lots of different providers offering these deals - the biggest open market deal is now being offered by Virgin Media.
