The four realms are supposed to represent the four like sources of dream power. Each one represents some different aspects of the way you can be powerful in this game. Niko, for example, is verdant. And he's basically a gal from Final Fantasy six. So everyone's bubbling towards enlightenment. Unless they're not then they're sinking towards doom.
