Even before the seventeenth century, we see active interest arising in seeing this as a problem. The people really pushing for this to be on the agenda and for rewards to be given were the people who might do well from them. And it was the case that while the longitude bill was being r discussed in the british parliament, that a captain was said to have said that mariners did not want the longitude. They had sufficient techniques that they didn't feel there was something missing.
