Dickens, in my view, is maybe our great, in England. Let's be bold. Our greatest novelist. In many of his novels, there's no doubt where he's going. There's no doubt what that message is. But to take up an individual life and show how this person lives - you don't have to say it was apartheid that caused the people to live. It comes from inside the individual. I can think now of my own country, of South Africa,. To fulminate about apartheid and quote all the different laws is one thing. But to taking up anindividual life and showing how this person lived... That isn't quite cut and dried, is it? Well
