German guilt and German exceptionalist narrative depends upon simply ignoring how much all the other European states acted like Germany. And so in recent times basically since the 1980s a new revisionist or sort of re-revisionist view has emerged, which removes responsibility from individual state actors. So it doesn't seem as if nationalism is adequate to explain again this specific war,. who got involved, when and how, and the level of death and destruction that resulted.
