The Importance of a Jewish Identity in Montreal
The Inquisition started around the 1400s. It was a time of deep religious persecution where many non-Catholics were forced to flee. So that first wave of Jews came over in substantial numbers, that was in the 1800s. Then you start to get the influx of some German Jews who are Ashkenazi. These are people from Eastern Europe, but they have very different religious traditions. And then you get the big wave of Eastern European Jews coming 1880 to about 1914. Their sheer numerical dominance changes the culture of Jews in Montreal.
