The Wealth of the Third Cousins
For more than a century and a half, the landed interests had dominated the social and political arena as an acknowledged continuous organization. Great estates no longer passed unimpaired from generation to generation. Altered laws caused a gradual disintegration in the case of individual holdings but brought no change in instances of corporate ownership. And so this was like the emergence of these merchants as exactly as he said, like the most powerful class in society, or the concentration of wealth with them.
