Mao's Rise to Leadership

Stalin spotted Mao as the most power-driven and ruthless of all Chinese leaders. He wanted to tie Japan down in China so it wouldn't turn north and attack Russia. His strategy more than his anti-military talent helped him rise up the ranks. But some say he was quite a good military leader, at least in terms of tactics. The biggest strategic success for his coming to power was during the war against Japan during the Second World War.
