You Can Fake It, but You Can't Really Be It

Every real art critic begins by starting in some museum and going like this, hoping somebody will be impressed. After a while, you forget about your ego and you just fall in love with whatever it is. This is also true in the moral sphere. If you have spent your life being crabby, or skin flinty, or unfair, you're not going to get rid of it right away. You can fake it, but you can't really be it, except through repeated trial and error.
