Lewis argues the sky would have meant something very different to us from what it means today. He says medieval cosmologists thought that the universe was structured according to a series of seven different heavens. Each planet revolving more rapidly than the lower ones and each exerting so it was believed peculiar influences over people on earth, events and even metals in earth's crust.
