Awareness is an experience we have in all experience, which is fluctuations of awareness that we call body, mind and the world. When these quieten down to a point where the mind becomes totally silent, there's no experience of sensation, perception or anything - what's left is awareness. So just as the eyes cannot see themselves and the teeth cannot bite themselves, awareness cannot be observed objectively.
