Facebook was not really a profitable thing for a very long time because it was just sort of gobbling up users. There were some ways to monetize content based on how many views you had. And there's a lot of things that changed that, in my opinion, didn't change for the better. They became a platform, like many social media platforms, that essentially will confirm your own bias.
