CHAPTER

The Relationship Between Academic Self-Concept and Academic Performance

There are three elements that they talk about and really I've already said one of them anyway so the first one is what they call the reciprocal effect model or REM. It basically says that prior self-concept predicts future academic performance and prior academic performance predicts future self-concept. The next one is actually really important like and quite bizarre to think about it's called the big fish little pond effect or the big pond little fish effect or how do you want to call it. If you're surrounded by peers who are worse than you at a thing your self-concept goes up, but if you go to a good school its negatively correlated with yourself.
