The Waiter's Struggle Through the Extatuation
Satter's thesis is that in order to cover up the point of his or her subject, a subject escapes into a foreign symbolic identity. The waiter succeeds in rejecting the identity to reduce him to nothing more than being a waiter and he does this by doing too much. One is truly identified with one's social role when one does not over identify with it,. When one accompanies one's playing the role, following its rules with the small violations for idiosyncrasies destined to signal that beneath the role I am playing, there is the real person who cannot be directly identified with the role.
