You Live on the Wrong Side of the Class Divide
You live on the wrong side of the class divide in the United States literally meant risking death. Working class families weren't actually completely on their own, they had to reach out beyond their family units if at all possible. I love this photo: Church of the Holy Family in Chicago. You can go all over Chicago as all of you should and what you'll see are those institutions rising up above working class neighborhoods. They dominated the landscape because it was a reflection of their faith. It was also a fundamentally important social service.
