Helen ellis grew up in tuskaloosa, alabama dreaming of being a writer. She moved to new york at 22 years old and went from publishing house to publishing house but no one would hire her. Helen worked in retail for a few years and then as a secretary. Finally she got her big break by getting into nwy's creative writing programme off the weight list.
