Marx's Faustian Wager

Gerta's Faust is an important text for understanding capital. Marx has a special relationship with this great text largely because it is in German and because it would have been something that he read as a schoolboy. He had many passages memorized. And what I think I've discovered in capital is that the very narrative of Faust, it's beginning, it's middle, and it's end, is the inspiration for Marx. But instead of leaving behind the great world's wisdom, he wants to re-mobilize it for the purposes of political justice and transformation.
